Champagne & Lemonade – John A.D. Hickling
The Last Word Review
If like me, you enjoy short stories then a delightful collection titled Champagne & Lemonade by John A.D. Hickling. Fifteen stories that are both delightful and eclectic. Readers can expect to be taken on journey to different times and places that includes a sparkling cast of characters.
I have selected to review one of the short stories called The Beautiful Snow. How many of us love the sight of a fresh snow fall on a crisp winters day? For PC Mark Welsh this will be a day of days. He is on his way to the station to start his shift and already the heavy snow fall is taking its toll at a nearby airport, his shift will be like no other day as he goes in search of a missing man in a nearby wood with people concerned about his wellbeing in the freezing conditions, but before he gets there he finds an overturned car with a mum and young daughter trapped in the wreckage. For PC Mark Welsh his day will just not end there is more to come as he later goes to the scene of another serious accident and a life is at stake and he will need all his training to save the man’s life. All this because of the beautiful snow. His shift finally ends when he climbs into bed that night and an arm around his sleeping wife.
There is of course time to enjoy the snow the next morning and the obligatory snow angels. This is just one of the short stories and characters you will encounter in Champagne & Lemonade and each story is beautifully written and will appeal to both the young and older reader. One I will happily recommend.
A short extract from the short story The Beautiful Snow.
- THE BEAUTIFUL SNOW.
“The snow made this particular night shift one of fear, fun, terror and hope for PC Mark Welsh.
We had been searching for half an hour on foot, neither of us was thinking the snow was beautiful at that moment; my vision of heaven was fast turning into hell. It was so bitterly cold it was cutting through me; it felt like my body was slowing down.”
